Rose Polenzani - Anybody (Daemon Records)
It's funny, but the first time I saw Andrew Bird play violin, I thought he was the Devil. According to the liner notes in this, so did Rose Polenzani, although maybe not to the oversexed, inebriated degree that I did. But anyway, the man plays just the sultriest, sleazy violin in the business, and the fact that Ms Polenzani chose him to play on this album raises my esteem of her to an immeasurable degree. Along with this fact, she is an incredible, darkly intelligent lyricist gifted with a voice worth delivering her punchlines. These songs border on being classified as folk, but with songs about abortion, God, the witch trials, and regret, they have just too much edge to them to really fall under that happy-go-lucky category.
